# The composer

> How the composer is laid out and what each part does.

The composer opens when you click the calendar or **Create post**.

## Layout

**Channels** across the top. Selecting more than one sends the post to all of
them as a [post group](/general/concepts#post-and-post-group).

**The editor** in the middle — the body of the post. It starts as one shared
message for every selected channel.

**Settings** on the right, one tab per selected channel, holding whatever that
platform requires.

**Date and time** at the bottom, with the action: save as draft, add to the
calendar, or post now.

## The shared draft

By default every channel gets the same text. That is usually what you want, and
it is why the composer opens in that mode.

When one platform needs different wording — a hashtag block on Instagram, a
shorter line on X — switch that channel to its own content. See
[global vs per-channel](/general/composer/global-vs-per-channel).

## Character counts

Each selected channel shows its own remaining count, because limits differ. The
lowest limit governs whether the shared draft can be scheduled everywhere.
